Happy New Year!

2018, already? Where did 2017 go? It began with a political embarrassment – accusations against newly-elected Rep. Dan Kirby of sexual misconduct in office and his resignation from the Oklahoma House of Representatives, which left District 75 completely unrepresented in the First Session of the 2017 Legislature. A Special Election followed and because of my participation in the prior General Election, a very special team joined me to organize, to direct, and to push all the way to victory in the election in July. I’ll never forget that victory party or the national recognition of a red district turning blue or the meetings and interviews in the days that followed! Two weeks after my swearing-in ceremony, a tornado ran straight through the middle of District 75. Luckily, no one was killed. I have had to learn the legislative process through the old “learning how to swim by being thrown out of the boat” method because the First Special Session started in September and the Second Special Session (The Governor vetoed much of which was passed in the First Special Session) started in December.

Representing the people of District 75 has been a real blessing to me. I have met a lot of interesting people, made a lot of new friends, and had a lot of new opportunities. When I decided to run for this position, I decided that my primary goals were to consider the needs of the people first and to make public education my platform issue. Before each vote I’ve cast in the Legislature, I’ve considered these two criteria first: “Is it fair to people and does it support public education?”. I also swore to serve with integrity and to be transparent to my constituents. To support these goals, I have published daily posts on my Representative Karen Gaddis Facebook page of each of the legislative sessions I have attended. People, public education, integrity, and transparency are all important to me. If you have any suggestions as to how I can support these goals better, please let me know.

Now I’m looking forward to 2018 and to what it will bring. Here’s hoping you good health, good relations, good food, and good times. Happy New Year from Representative Karen Gaddis.
